AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation
of all AWS global infrastructure. In other words, we’re the people who keep the
cloud running. We support all AWS data centers and all of the servers, storage,
networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure our customers have
continual access to the innovation they rely on. We work on the most challenging
problems, with thousands of variables impacting the supply chain — and we’re
looking for talented people who want to help.
You’ll join a diverse team of software, hardware, and network engineers, supply
chain specialists, security experts, operations managers, and other vital roles.
You’ll collaborate with people across AWS to help us deliver the highest
standards for safety and security while providing seemingly infinite capacity at
the lowest possible cost for our customers. And you’ll experience an inclusive
culture that welcomes bold ideas and empowers you to own them to completion.
Amazon Web Services is seeking a Senior Industrial Designer to become part of a
global engineering team, responsible for the implementation and technical
evaluation of our designs and the continuous innovation of our rapidly expanding
data center footprint. As a Senior Industrial Designer, you will be embedded in
the modular rack-design process, working closely with Mechanical, Electrical,
Structural, Networking, and Hardware Design Engineers and the broader hardware
team to develop global standards and deliver consistent integrated racking
systems to our AWS data centers. This role will require ownership of industrial
modular racking, with a focus on design, analysis, coordination,
constructability, transport and delivery, installation, and sequencing across
trades.
Key job responsibilities
- Own development of racking system, working from concept geometry or sketches
to production-intent 3D models.
- Strong technical communication. Produce clear and concise racking
documentation such as detailed design specifications, drawings, white papers,
wiring schematics and diagrams, and reports.
- Understand and safeguard implementation of the Global Racking Basis of Design
(BoD) by driving standardization in the data center designs.
- Development of strategic solutions, which meet or exceed our quality
requirements and fall within our budgetary requirements. Capture requirements
and turn aspirational company or customer goals into well-defined, achievable
and testable specifications and solutions.
- Define project scope and provide technical support for information requests
prior to, and during innovation and research and development projects.
- Work with regional vendors and manufacturers to specify and factory test the
appropriate racking system.
- Strong multidisciplinary collaboration. Design racking that considers and
accommodates electrical, networking, and fire protection integration.
- Structural design of racking, connections, and anchorage to account for
various global codes, loading, seismic, and anchorage needs. Design to include
member sizing and consider both cold-formed and structural steel options.
Anchorage design to expand to foundation or impacts to the primary structure.
- Design and analyze racking for various framing configurations, and size
members and design anchorage to accommodate the loads and forces.
- Structural analysis using finite element analysis (FEA) and structural
engineering software. (RISA, SAP, ETABS, TEDDs, etc.)
- Lateral force, seismic restraint, and dynamic load evaluation.
- Experience with modular construction and prefabricated systems.
- Ability to interpret manufacturing tolerances and fabrication processes.
- Proficiency with CAD/BIM tools (such as AutoCAD, Revit, Tekla, or SolidWorks).
- Understanding of safety, reliability, constructability, and lifecycle
considerations for industrial structures.
- Open to travel 25% of the time
A day in the life
You'll start your day connecting with global team members to review ongoing
projects. You might analyze updated layout or loading inputs, collaborate with
mechanical and electrical product engineers on innovative product integration,
or mentor fellow engineers. You'll participate in design reviews, engage with
vendors, and contribute to sustainability and constructability initiatives that
shape our environmental footprint.
