Crew Lead - Data Center Services

Job Summary

The Crew Lead - Data Center Services is responsible for supporting the physical and virtual infrastructure within the data center environment while providing on-site coordination and day-to-day crew leadership.

This role supports data center moves, adds, and changes (MACs), equipment installations, cabling, asset management, troubleshooting, documentation, and operational compliance. The Crew Lead also helps ensure data center activities align with industry standards, established procedures, safety requirements, and customer expectations.

Key Responsibilities

Coordinate and support scheduled data center moves, adds, and changes (MACs) in alignment with established project and maintenance schedules.

Serve as the on-site coordinator and crew lead for data center installation, cabling, maintenance, and infrastructure activities.

Perform equipment installations, including device labeling, power connections, low-voltage cabling, cable dressing, testing, and certification.

Execute cable work orders and assist with developing project scopes, bills of materials (BOMs), and related documentation.

Provide smart-hands support and assist with networking, storage, power distribution, and other infrastructure-related activities.

Troubleshoot Layer 1 connectivity and cable plant issues and escalate technical concerns as needed.

Maintain accurate documentation for assets, rack and cabinet layouts, cable plant patching, labeling standards, ticket activity, and installation records.

Conduct asset audits, daily data center inspections, and error log reporting to identify issues related to power, cooling, hazards, equipment, and overall facility health.

Coordinate equipment and material receiving, shipping, delivery, installation scheduling, returns, and RMA processing.

Maintain secure asset disposal and hard drive retention processes in accordance with established policies and procedures.

Support standard and emergency operating procedures and help ensure maintenance activities align with data center best practices.

Assist with monitoring and reporting data center availability, performance, capacity utilization, and operational conditions.

Support the development and maintenance of processes, documentation, and performance measures required for audit and operational compliance.

Assist with compliance efforts related to applicable standards and certifications, including ISO 27001, ISO 9001, and TIA/EIA-942.

Participate in data center expansion, migration, installation, and decommissioning projects.

Maintain a safe, secure, organized, and professional data center environment and promptly report any safety, security, or operational concerns.

Maintain cleanliness of racks, cabinets, work areas, raised-floor spaces, and other assigned data center areas as needed.

Technical Skills and Knowledge

Working knowledge of data center infrastructure, structured cabling, equipment installation, and basic network connectivity.

Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications, testing and certification tools, ticketing systems, and Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) platforms.

Strong documentation, troubleshooting, organizational, and communication skills.

Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining attention to detail in a mission-critical environment.

Leadership Expectations

The Crew Lead is expected to provide hands-on leadership, coordinate daily work activities, maintain high standards for safety and quality, and support the team in resolving technical and operational issues. Successful individuals in this role are dependable, detail-oriented, technically capable, and comfortable working in a fast-paced data center environment.

Required Tools

Basic Hand Tools: Standard and Phillips screwdrivers, drywall saw, torpedo level, tape measure, snips, needle-nose and channel-lock pliers, hammer, cable stripper, flashlight, and gloves.

Trade Tools: Punch-down tool with 110/66 blades, 6/8-position crimp tool, Krone/3M/BIX tools, butt set, volt-ohm meter, 4-pair continuity tester, and 5-gang punch tool.

Qualifications

Physical and Professional Requirements

Self-motivated, professional, and able to work independently in a fast-paced data center environment.

Strong problem-solving, critical thinking, communication, and customer service skills.

Ability to serve as a Company liaison with customers, vendors, and business partners.

General knowledge of telecom/IP equipment, software configurations, and basic AC/DC power principles.

Ability to support process improvements and promote Company culture, safety, and service standards.

Ability to work at heights, on ladders, and in confined spaces.

Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and move equipment or materials weighing up to 75 pounds.

Ability to distinguish colors, read small print, and recognize audible signals.

Regular and reliable attendance is required.

Education, Experience, and Skills

High school diploma or GED required.

Minimum of three (3) years of experience in data centers, telecommunications, datacom, or a related technical field.

Minimum of six (6) months of supervisory or leadership experience.

Ability to terminate fiber and properly use required hand and trade tools.

Ability to read and interpret blueprints, specifications, reports, and quality documentation.

Working knowledge of universal telecommunications color codes.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and Microsoft Project.

Network, storage, or server certifications are preferred.

Must meet Company driving requirements.
