Come join us in accelerating the energy and infrastructure transition!
Basic Function
SB Energy is seeking a Manager with deep industry and OEM experience to lead the electrical procurement engineering for owner-furnished, contractor-installed (OFCI) power equipment supporting AI data centers. You will own the electrical product roadmap, procurement technical requirements, and equipment acceptance decisions downstream of the high-voltage substation.
Working directly with SB Energy’s clients, OEMs, and vendors, you will deliver highly reliable solutions at the best total cost of ownership (TCO). From day one, you will make independent decisions under ambiguity, advance innovation and equipment fungibility, and enable multi-sourcing. You will build a team with the capacity and domain expertise needed to deliver the full electrical equipment scope.
Responsibilities
Equipment coverage includes but is not limited to the categories below.
Power equipment
Distribution: MV/LV switchgear, ring main units, switchboards, panelboards, standalone motor-control centers/drives and, power, distribution, and isolation transformers.
Backup and stored power: generators and integral fuel, starting, and exhaust auxiliaries; paralleling gear; MV/LV UPS; batteries/BESS; chargers and DC power systems.
Transfer and final distribution: ATS/STS, busway/busduct, power distribution units, remote power panels, rack PDUs, and power cables and terminations.
Packaged power: electrical skids, e-houses, modular power blocks, and packaged substations downstream of the HV substation.
Protection and monitoring: relays, metering, electrical power management systems, control panels, power-quality equipment, surge protection, grounding assemblies, and load banks.
Role accountabilities
Personally lead electrical technical decisions from day one. Prioritize deliverables and specialist support, identify capability gaps.
Once staffed, coach, develop, and manage direct reports to establish LLE ownership across distribution, backup/stored power, and other power packages.
Own electrical equipment specifications, Basis of Design (BOD), product configurations, and interfaces. Translate client requirements and Engineering/EOR design intent into procurement requirements. Own facility-side power and protection interfaces to cooling equipment.
Own the electrical product roadmap: performance requirements, technology evaluation, pilots, standard product families, refresh cycles, and obsolescence. Agree priorities with clients and vendors, and recommend adoption based on reliability, manufacturability, and TCO.
Own electrical fungibility criteria and technical equivalence decisions across OEMs, equipment generations, and projects. Validate ratings, footprints, connections, protection, controls, and service requirements. Record limits on interchangeability and required adaptations.
Enable multi-sourcing by developing vendor-neutral requirements and technically approving alternate electrical products. Supply product assessments to Supplier Engineering, which owns OEM/factory qualifications. Category Procurement owns sourcing awards, negotiations, and contracts.
Lead electrical proposals, drawings, calculations, and compliance reviews with clients and vendors. Evaluate redundancy, fault ratings, protection, maintainability, and integration. Make product acceptance and deviation decisions within delegated authority, escalating material residual risk.
Own electrical equipment TCO comparisons covering acquisition, installation, losses, maintenance, spares, service, replacement, and downtime exposure. Use client operating needs and vendor evidence to recommend the most reliable, cost-effective solution.
Define equipment-specific Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), Factory Witness Testing (FWT), and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) criteria. Evaluate results and own electrical technical acceptance under the common framework maintained by Supplier Engineering.
Own electrical impact assessments for client/design changes and technical dispositions for equipment defects. Lead electrical problem-solving through manufacturing and commissioning, providing decisions to TPM and engineering input to Quality-led corrective actions.
Measure electrical performance, deviation closure, and field lessons to improve the product roadmap. Engineering/EOR retains project design ownership; Quality owns audits and nonconformance processes; Construction/Commissioning owns field execution. TPM coordinates milestones and decision closure.
Qualifications/Requirements
Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or related engineering discipline with substantial electrical power systems specialization required. A master’s degree or Professional Engineer (PE) license is an advantage.
12+ years of progressively responsible experience in electrical equipment engineering, procurement engineering, OEM engineering, or mission-critical power infrastructure, including substantial experience delivering equipment for hyperscale, colocation, or enterprise data centers.
Demonstrated electrical subject-matter expertise and success building and leading engineering teams. Experience hiring and developing category specialists, delegating decisions, managing performance, and ensuring adequate coverage across complex equipment portfolios.
Extensive experience within an OEM or directly leading technical engagements with OEM engineering and manufacturing teams. Evidence of personal accountability for equipment qualification, supplier design decisions, factory testing, and resolution of significant field issues.
Deep knowledge of medium- and low-voltage distribution, UPS and generators, protection and coordination interfaces, grounding, controls, and reliability requirements. Ability to interpret single-line diagrams, calculations, test reports, and applicable electrical codes and equipment standards.
Strong commercial acumen demonstrated through total cost of ownership (TCO) analysis, technical bid evaluation, scope definition, value engineering, and assessment of the financial consequences of design changes and supplier limitations.
Demonstrated ability to operate independently from day one, establish priorities with incomplete information, challenge weak assumptions, and make timely decisions while protecting safety and mission-critical performance.
A record of developing product roadmaps, qualifying new technologies, and enabling equipment fungibility and multi-sourcing. Ability to prove technical equivalence and identify integration or lifecycle risks before approving an alternative.
Credibility with client technical leaders, OEMs, vendors, and internal partners. Clear executive communication and constructive negotiation of technical tradeoffs. Willingness to travel domestically and internationally to factories, test facilities, client locations, and project sites.
Working arrangements
Assignments may span projects, equipment categories, suppliers, and locations and may change with business needs. The role includes supplier, factory, warehouse, and active construction site visits, coordination across time zones, and compliance with site safety and access requirements. Managers lead execution through qualified suppliers and project resources.
Location: Redwood City, Denver, San Diego, Austin.
Remote may be considered on case-by-case basis
Base Pay - $140,000 - $170,000
