Join us at SB Energy, a leading infrastructure company backed by SoftBank Group and Ares Infrastructure, pairing cutting-edge innovation with best-in-class execution. Our mission is to deliver reliable and secure data center and power infrastructure to strengthen America's future.

Founded in 2019, SB Energy is a SoftBank Group company headquartered in Redwood City, California. In 2026, SoftBank Group and OpenAI announced a $1 billion investment to support SB Energy as their leading development and execution partner for data center campuses, while Ares Infrastructure continues its long-standing support of the company's growth. SB Energy develops, builds, owns, and operates some of the largest and most technically advanced energy and data center infrastructure projects in the United States. Since its founding, the company has rapidly grown into a top-tier integrated platform with more than 3 gigawatts (GW) in operation and a multi-GW pipeline of energy and data center infrastructure nationwide.

SB Energy also leverages a strong culture of innovation to identify and integrate new technologies into its projects, including its AI-based digital platform, delivering energy infrastructure that is local, reliable, and matched to load. We are building the energy and infrastructure future—today.

Come join us in accelerating the energy and infrastructure transition!

Basic Function:

SB Energy is seeking a Principal Civil Engineer to join the Data Center team.

In this role, you will serve as a senior individual contributor responsible for the planning, design development, technical review, and standardization of civil engineering infrastructure for large-scale, mission-critical data center campuses. You will apply deep civil engineering expertise to establish and continuously improve standards, specifications, design criteria, and delivery frameworks that support scalable, cost-effective, and efficient development across a growing portfolio of projects.

You will work closely with internal project teams, engineering consultants, contractors, utilities, and permitting authorities, providing hands-on technical expertise, resolving complex engineering challenges, and driving consistency and engineering excellence across projects.

Responsibilities:

Develop, implement, and continuously improve civil engineering standards, design criteria, specifications, and best practices across data center projects

Serve as a senior technical resource for site development, grading, drainage, utility infrastructure, stormwater management, erosion control, access roads, and site logistics planning

Evaluate new technologies, design approaches, construction methodologies, and vendor solutions to improve project performance, reduce costs, and enhance scalability

Perform detailed technical review of civil engineering deliverables and provide recommendations to ensure alignment with company standards, Owner's Project Requirements (OPR), and project objectives

Partner with regional design and execution teams to capture lessons learned and incorporate continuous improvements into future developments

Collaborate with our Development team on site due diligence activities, including assessment of land constraints, utility availability, permitting requirements, environmental considerations, and development feasibility

Collaborate with utility providers, municipalities, regulatory agencies, and permitting authorities to support project development and approvals

Perform and support value engineering analyses, providing technical recommendations that optimize constructability, schedule, operational performance, resilience, and lifecycle costs

Develop and implement tools, templates, processes, and technical guidance that improve engineering consistency, efficiency, and quality across the portfolio

Support development and standardization of site infrastructure requirements for roads, utilities, stormwater systems, water supply, wastewater, and other critical civil infrastructure

Review site layouts and master plans to ensure efficient integration of buildings, infrastructure systems, and future expansion requirements

Collaborate closely with architecture, mechanical, electrical, procurement, construction, environmental, and operations teams throughout the project lifecycle

Support sustainability initiatives by incorporating responsible land development practices, water management strategies, and resilient infrastructure solutions

Provide hands-on civil engineering support and technical oversight during design, construction, commissioning, and project closeout phases

Provide technical guidance and knowledge sharing to project teams and engineering partners, promoting engineering excellence and consistent best practices

Provide technical input to contractor, consultant, and engineering partner selection, evaluation, and performance reviews

Perform additional duties as required to support project and organizational objectives

Qualifications/Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or related engineering discipline from an accredited institution

Professional Engineer (PE) license required or strongly preferred

10–15+ years of experience in civil engineering design, site development, and infrastructure delivery for data centers, mission-critical facilities, industrial, energy, or large-scale commercial projects

Demonstrated expertise in civil engineering systems including grading, drainage, stormwater management, utilities, roadways, underground infrastructure, and site development

Proven experience serving as a senior technical contributor on multidisciplinary projects and coordinating or providing technical direction to design consultants across multiple projects

Strong understanding of land development processes, permitting, zoning, environmental regulations, and utility coordination

Experience supporting projects across North America and/or European development and construction environments

Strong knowledge of applicable civil engineering codes, industry standards, and regulatory requirements

Experience with civil engineering and design tools including AutoCAD Civil 3D, GIS applications, and BIM-based coordination platforms

Ability to review and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, reports, calculations, and construction documents

Experience coordinating with cross-functional stakeholders including consultants, contractors, utility providers, regulatory agencies, procurement teams, and operations organizations

Strong analytical, problem-solving, decision-making, and communication skills with the ability to influence outcomes in a fast-paced environment

Experience supporting large-scale campus developments, mission-critical facilities, renewable energy infrastructure, or hyperscale data center projects preferred

Location: Remote

Base Pay - $160,000 - $200,000
